The word emeritus, pronounced "eh-MER-ih-tus," is Latin, originally meaning "veteran soldier." When a tenured professor retires, he is given the honorary title of “professor emeritus.” What are the duties of a professor emeritus? Faculty often switch the status of a professor to emeritus to free up a faculty slot for a new hire. Emeritus professors are typically no longer expected to conduct research, attend meetings, and teach classes. A professor emeritus (plural: professors emeriti) is a retired professor who was given the title as an honor upon retirement. Though some professors emeriti continue working part-time at an institution following retirement, many may no longer work actively for a college or university. Professor emeritus or emerita is a continuing appointment status, inactive until a “rehire” appointment (using the emeritus or emerita title) is approved in paid or unpaid renewable positions for up to one year at a time.
